A few days ago, the home of Ronald McDonald released one of it’s brand spanking new, Lent-friendly items: the Fish McBites. Being an avid hate of all things fish stick-like, the sound of these small bits of fried fish made my stomach turn.
However, being someone who isn’t afraid to try anything once, and someone who is all about trying new experiences, I decided to go out on a limb, get over my fear of these new menu items, and order a snack size portion of the Fish McBites.
As soon as I got to the window, the McDonald’s employee informed me that my snack was “fresh from the grease.” “Of course,” I thought, “No one else in Clinton, Mississippi has dared to order these.”
Upon first glance of the Fish McBites, I was actually impressed and not at all grossed out. Being a child that was raised on Chicken McNuggets, I was pleased at how they compared. Unlike the McNuggets, the McBites were fairly uniform in size and shape. Mickey D’s claims that the fish in the McBites is 100% wild Alaskan Pollock, and upon breaking open a piece, it actually looked like fish compared to the chicken mush you get in a McNugget. Not to mention, I got a generous portion of McBites even in a snack size.
So…the verdict: They’re good. Surprisingly, they’re really good! They actually do not remind me of fish sticks at all. I thought that I might eat one or two of these little things, but I quickly devoured the whole snack portion and actually was left wanting a few more. The crust was very good and reminded me of mozzarella stick bread crumb crust, which is a favorite of mine. The actual meat did not leave a nasty fishy taste like I was expecting, and was quite mild for the most part. I would definitely recommend trying these in the provided tartar sauce to amp of the flavor.
I was a critic, and after trying the McBites, I have become a fan. Next time I hit up McDonald’s (which could probably be a while), I will actually order a side of fries to fulfill my fish and chips craving that I’ve had since leaving London.
You’re still no Chick-Fil-A, but good job, McDonald’s.
